Morning Musume – Maji Desu ka Ska!
Considerably Morning Musume’s most important release since the start Onna Ni Sache Are, Maji desu ka SKA is Morning Musume’s first single to include the th generation. From it’s name, I was expecting something up-beat and along the lines of Koko ni Iruzee, and it hasn’t been off the mark.
There’s nothing of the previous moody 9-8 nin feel about it… well except for maybe the fact Ai is centre and her and Reina and still devouring most the lines and that the costumes remind me of “Nai Chau Kamo” – however a medicine easily swallowed, as everyone get’s lots of camera time in the new PV and has solo lines ~ you can’t have it all, and it’s also difficult for fans to outright accept a new generation. We only have about 6 more months of Ai left in Momusu as well – so I think it’s more than acceptable that one of Momusu’s most memoriable and performance-wise, strongest leader get’s a few more solo lines.
But onto the single – well, I wouldn’t particulary call it a master-piece classic which will score a #1 hit, but it is, for me, a step towards the “Golden Era” Momusu which a lot of fans constantly complain about missing. Although it doesn’t have the production values of the previous songs, the video is quirky and energetic.
One thing I do get sick of is people complaining about the production of PVs – a realization that has probably hit me more recently when I was going through a lot of files on my computer with my boyfriend, who commented that SNSD’s “Visual Dreams” looked “really cheap” – I think we sometimes bash Momusu and H!P in general a bit too much for their blue-screen PVs, when in fact, bands like Arashi and SNSD get away with it all the time – if you stick an interesting enough dance, or a popular enough group in front of it, blue-screen PVs are a great alternative to having to pay the story boarder, director and anyone else involved with making big budget numbers. I’m not disagreeing that some H!P videos in the recent years lack imagination and are lazy and cheap – but tarring all PVs with the same brush is unacceptable – but that’s for another time.
So after that small rant, the point I’m trying to get across with the PV is that it’s simple and effective – it’s playful. As my Japanese teach says, “Recognition is most important!” – here she’s talking about Kanji, but it can also be applied to the remembers of homogenous idol groups, and making sure Erina, Riho, Zukki and Fuku get as much airtime as possible is also important. Not only that but these girls really make the song – it’s fast energetic pace and playful nature is something which has been missing from a Momusu A-side since… well, Mikan.
And as soon as I say Mikan, here’s where the trouble begins. You see Mikan is probably one of the most popular live songs in recent years, but the sales absolutely tanked. After that, we’ve been subjected to three years of moody singles – so is this a risk too far?
Hopefully not – it’s time for Momusu to push forward into a new era, and this single definetly has the push to do it!
Dream Momusu ~ Yes Please!
It’s funny how some things never change. Almost two years ago we were sitting here, thinking we may not ever hear Yuuko, Nacchi and Kaori belt out Morning Coffee again, and more recently, it also looked like Koharu was leaving the Hello! Project bandwagon to become a model… but once again, everyone (well, everyone who still works for UFA and has nothing better to do) has come back to Momusu.
And regardless of the current line-up’s struggle against their AKB rivals, the classic Morning Musume line up (less some, plus some) seems to always fall back on it’s feet.
What’s most impressive about the latest announcement of Dream Morning Musume (comprismising of Yuuko Nakagawa, Kaori Iida, Natsumi Abe, Kei Yasuda, Mari Yaguchi, Rika Ishikawa, Hitomi Yoshizawa, Makoto Ogawa, Miki Fujimoto and Koharu Kusumi) isn’t so much their debut tour, nor their album, but more that in a matter of days of officially announcing their formation, they also annouced a 40 date tour this autumn. It also seems like tsunku is setting this unit up for the long-run as their debut album is called Dream (1), taking on the numerical sequence of Hello! Project albums.
Rumours about the group were circulating before the triple graduation – however, I think everyone expected it to be similar to the Elder Club style, rather than an album producing unit. I imagine this has been an idea in the making for a while, given HANGRY & ANGRY‘s inactivity, and the annoucment that Tsuji would not be participating due to the birth of her son (which makes me wonder if it was planned before she was pregnant).
I’m looking forward to how the new album will sound. Hopefully new vocal arrangments of all the songs will be made – as much as Nacchi is the voice of Morning Musume, I’d love to hear a fresh take on many of the singles. In particular, Mikan will be interesting to listen to ~ I remember that when it was announced that Kaori’s son had died, Yuuko used lyrics from this song to help describe her feelings towards her friend and life in general.
I’m also interested to see how the group has gelled. We all know the rumors that Mikitty and Charmy didn’t get on, Nacchi has diva tendencies and Koharu was only really a Musume along side Makoto and Mikitty. They’ll also be an age gap of 19 years between Koharu and Yuuko.
Now hopefuly, they’ll still be together when I finally get my backside to Japan
Maki Goto – Goto Maki COMPLETE BEST ALBUM 2001-2007 ~Singles & Rare Tracks~

For those of us that mourned the lack of a Maki Goto greatest hits CD two years ago, was getting this CD was worth the wait? Not only does it detail Maki’s singles through her years with Hello! Project, but also includes a number of solo, Korean and live versions of a wide number of her songs. Throwing this CD on, you’re drawn from debut number one “Ai no Bakayarou” to her last single with Hello! Project, “Secret” in chronological order.
I was particularly interested in this album to here Maki’s solo version of one of my favourite Morning Musume songs – I WISH. Unfortunately the group version does sound a lot better, but I love the novelty of these solo versions – a lot of which I hadn’t heard before. The Korean versions of Daite, PLEASE GO ON and Supin to Namida were also quite interesting (although distinctly lacked the energy of the originals), but the last three “live” tracks were a complete wash out, as I’m failing to hear the difference between these and the album originals. And there’s even a cover of an Aya Matsuura track Watarasebashi. However, most of these “rare” tracks would be better termed “recycled“, as most can be found as album tracks on her first three albums.
Sales have been dire, which even surprised me. The album peeked at number 30 on first day sales, ranked weekly at 74 and has only sold 1,920 copies! Considering Maki still claims a lot of media attention in Japan and that this album has come sandwiched between two mini albums, I was expecting a little more hype around it.
So overall, a must for any Hello! Project or Maki Goto fan, but don’t get your hopes up too much about the rare tracks. Post-debut single onwards, her songs until her last album with H!P are quintessentially “Hello! Project” – and no doubt we’ll be hearing more covers of these by the current Hello! Project members.

The rare tracks left us expecting something which unfortunately UFA didn’t deliver. It would have also been nice to seen a few more current Maki pictures used, but for obvious reasons, none must have been available.
Triple Graduation – it’s time for some fresh blood
One of the inevitable facts of life a Morning Musume fan has to accept is that members will graduate. However, a triple graduation is an unheard of in the history of Morning Musume, so maybe it’s only expected that some fans have got so upset.
Eri will graduate due to a skin condition. Nights and nights under strong lights and heavy foundation can’t be helping this condition, and lets face it, her skin will only start to age from this point in her life onwards. Those new Blu-Ray DVDs also will put the problem in HD, not good for Eri me thinks!
Jun/Lin returning to China also doesn’t surprise me that much. I’m a big fan, but they were added to the group for one reason – to increase sales and popularity in China. I remember reading a website interview, around the time Nai Chau Kamo came out on how they had been unable to gain a Chinese market mainly due to the wide-spread* piracy in China. Wow – China? Piracy? I would have never of thought… LinLin’s vocals and both of their personalities have been a breath of fresh air in a group full of mainly shy idols. Along with Sayumi they’re usually the only ones who will chatter nonchalantly in TV interviews. After reading both girl’s blog entries, it looks pretty clear that the graduation was not their idea in the least. However, I wouldn’t blame tsunku either for this. He’s noticed the talent which both girls have and has constantly been pushing them – if anything, maybe they’ve stayed longer than it was thought in Morning Musume due to his blessing… although this is one of those things we’ll really never know and can only guess.
Jun/Lin also seem to have a lot more appeal with the overseas fan-base than the domestic Japanese one. In England, we love an underdog. But since joining they’ve already preformed in Shanghai, Paris, LA… all the big spots. LA Expo and JE probably wont have Morning Musume back any time soon, simple due to the fact that there are many different flavours of Japanese music to showcase, and it’s unfair on such a general event to keep bringing the same band back.
Their future is probably questionable. They don’t have the history of the other members, hence why they’re probably not going to be hanging around in Japan. However, careers in China? Well, we’re see. I’m not really big in knowledge of the Chinese equivilents of “talentos”.
This also throws tsunku’s shuffle groups right out the window, as #Tanpopo, Zoku V-U-DEN and Shin Mini Moni all loose a member. Tsunku will have to try to shuffle the girls again (get rid of a few from ZYX maybe?).
But to be complelty honest, I’m not upset at all, but rather excited.
I’m very much in the same midset as ptom about this – Morning Musume have been stuck in a rut since Koharu left – before she left we could even question. They’ve been relying too much on Ai to carry them vocally, and completely lost all the fun which surrounds them. To be perfectly honest, I think this is a great time to get some new comers in and prepare Ai and Gaki to move on.
This is the drastic change which Morning Musume has needed for years, and I’m also wondering how they will select the 9th generation. Although there will be auditions (with a much stricter age limit of 10-17 meaning there is room for a very young generation), I’m wondering if they will also place a few eggs into the group. The eggs have been pretty defunct recently, with no Shugo Chara releases, and S/mileage absorbing a large quantity of the talent. How frustrating must it be, being an egg for years and then seeing new girls feed straight through into the flagship group?
But after writing all this, please don’t get me wrong, I be very sad to see all three members go. Eri to me was classic “idol”, which she epitomised in her “Kataomoi ni Owari” single. LinLin and JunJun were the members (along with Koharu) who where able to insert that bit of energy into Morning Musume which they’ve been desperately lacking in their singles over the last few years.
So lets enjoy some of my favourite moments, firstly Eri’s “Kataomoi ni Owari” from Platinum 9 Disco:
One of the songs Eri sang best solo or in a group, and a demonstration of how she was a natural Morning Musume member, Hare Ame Nochi Suki from the Graduation concert in 2009:
Koharu, Aika, Jun Jun and Lin Lin singing Furusato ~ the first time I realised how amazing Lin Lin’s voice really was (Hello! Project anniversary concert 2007):
And of course, the song which was more or less written for JunLin from 9 Smile:
Good luck to them all, and I hope they enjoy their last 4 months of Morning Musume.
S/mileage – ○○Ganbaranakutemo Eenende!!
I’m stuck inside on a pretty nice Saturday afternoon. The car has broken again. I can’t watch anything as the computer’s media player is lagging badly and I canceled my Crunchyroll subscription to save cash. But at least something is making me smile – S/mileage’s new single “○○ Ganbaranakutemo Eenende!!”.
Over the past couple of years there have been constant complaints from me about Hello! Project (with the exception, recently of my infallible Berryz Kobo), but this is the first time I’ve felt extremely confident in something Hello! Project have done… well… since I became a fan.
The single seems to combine everything which was right about Hello! Project – it’s fun, demonstrates that the girls have singing ability and most of all, it’s upbeat. I’m not saying it will outsell AKB48, hell it probably wont outsell Morning Musume, but I don’t care any more, being sales orientated about bands can get pretty meaningless (it’s also pretty depressing if you’re a H!P fan), the song has that element which so many H!P tracks have been missing recently. It spreads out lines, it’s energetic without being too synthy and reflects what H!P can do if they can be bothered. Being such a small group, I’m starting to really see the chemistry and unity between the group come through in their songs, which is another factor endeering me to the girls.
The best feature though, by a long shot, has to be the PV. S/mileage demonstrate how you make a dance shot PV entertaining – firstly, by adding some nice after effects and secondly, by making more cuts. Even though the effects go over the top at stages, it really is a flawless attempt. It reminds me somewhat of a cross between a Mini-Moni and Tampopo PV - the way the girls have been stylised recently in their black-and-white uniforms and the element of fun with the moustache shots. The dancing with cane’s is also funny to watch, and the whole thing comes of quite slap-stick. It’s a great shame that this type of temporal and monetary investment can’t be given to Berryz, Morning Musume and C-ute… but things are looking up! ManoEri‘s new PV has an established director(!), and the previews look pretty interesting. And C-ute‘s new single also sounds pretty interesting…
S/mileages latest effort is making me think that Hello! Project are beginning to take things seriously, and even if they can’t compete with AKB48 and all their other entities at the moment, at least they’re not throwing the towel in. As many people have pointed out, AKB48 are currently as popular the Hello! Project were 10 years ago. It’s just a question of where both AKB48 and H!P will be in another 10 years…
S/mileage’s single came out on the 27/07/2010 c/w “○○ Ganbaranakutemo Iin da yo!!” and “Smile Bijin” as well as a karaoke version of “○○ Ganbaranakutemo Eenende!!”
